We always knew it Mamata: People of Singur were never your concern

We never had any doubts as to what Mamata would do at the end of her meeting with the patriarch Jyoti Basu. It was very obvious – she had put forward her demands - nobody would or could ever meet them. That was her very strategy. Ask for something that cannot be ever met and that is the end of all. Mamata's mantra is simple - do a turnaround and try to rouse the dying fire.

Off late, Mamata had realized that Singur was dead. That except for a few farmers, the others had seen the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and were only interested that peace and following that - prosperity should now be their life's course. But, for Mamata – peace is a four-letter word. Thus Mamata came up with the idea of creating this whole show of meeting the great patriarch of Bengal Jyoti Basu to solve the Singur issue et all. She knew such a move would whip up media interest again, which was the last hope for her to try and rekindle the issue.

Though Mamata gave an impression that she is as aggressive as she has been in the past, but actually she is becoming rest less to find a solution. She is softening owing to the so called very affected people not supporting her anymore is very evident in her change in stance. Earlier she was against having industry on agricultural land, but now she is fighting for returning the land that has been forcibly acquired. A typical chameleon like color change, common with vote bank politicians.

Now, that her reasons for all these moves is clear, lets see what has been the outcome. It has been a disaster for her party TMC, and a number of her close colleagues and confidante’s have internally criticized the whole – “ Tamasha”.

1. Many leaders of her party feels that by responding to Jyoti Basu's call for a meeting, Mamata had fallen into the trap of CPI (M) and they are quiet upset on the move taken by her. These leaders feel that if Mamata is unable to get the land back from the Govt. and the car rolls out in 2008, then she will have a major political set back.
2. Though Left front had lost the recent panchayat election at Panskura, yet they won the two most crucial seats of Singur - the bone of contention (our blog had carried the election result in an earlier article) and overall the Left Front have done pretty well in the election and given the trend, there is no great hope of TMC doing well in the forthcoming panchayat election to take place after 1 year.
3. Next State Assembly elections will be held after 4 years. If she fails to come to any settlement on the issue, then it would be quiet tough for her to continue with the agitation for another 4 years, and Mamata will be held responsible. She already stands responsible for the deaths in Singur.
4. On June 18 there is hearing at the High Court on several cases on Singur. Mamata's camp feels that the judgement will not go in their favour for which they are now preparing themselves to move to Supreme Court.

But between all these wheeling and dealings, both Mamata and her party are just singularly focused in increasing the political clout of TMC. Why else are they even refusing to hold talks for the compensation package? At the end, the package would be the biggest benefit for the people of Singur.

But, when did actually Mamata bother about the people of Singur.

Concern For Our State, Our People
The state of unrest, chaos, violence, road blockades, rallies and above all the Bandhs have crippled the little progress the State of West Bengal has made in the last few years. The Opposition, for the sake of opposing has made life miserable for the people like us in the city. We lost count of how many times the car has stopped moving for hours in the Esplanade area for the last 6 – 7 months.

The gruesome, violent and barbaric act with choicest of expletives mouthed by the ‘peace loving’ Opposition party members at the Assembly shows their nature, their culture and their political ideology. These activities definitely speak highly about their leader Mamata Banerjee. Under her durable leadership they have opened up a Huge Umbrella – Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee – to prevent agricultural land from being acquired by the government. Noble thought, great effort, no doubt! But who are they inviting to protest against government’s industrial drive? Does anybody think that the Maoists, Naxalites and Jamiat E Ulema I Hind, under the KJRC umbrella will bring prosperity to the State, to the people of the State, to the Farmers for whom you say you are fighting for?! Except for violent agitations what can they give us? Mamata, what image are you creating for your party in the name of your pro – poor stance?

Well, there are sane people in the state who very much understand your manifesto i.e. to regain lost ground and win the Panchayat elections. If you think that with the support of the Maoists, Naxals, etc you would form a Government in West Bengal then you must be day dreaming, Lady.

Nandigram Police firing shouldn’t have happened. It’s a shameful act and we condemn it. The Government should have taken proper steps so that such an incident would not have taken place. We need to at the same time also think that how come the villagers got firearms to attack the Police? What will happen to the CPM supporters who have already been driven out of Nandigram? Will they forever remain homeless just because they support CPM? What is the Opposition doing to reinstate these people to their respective homes? Except continuously pointing fingers at the government and giving details of how many people have given land, how many haven’t and how much land is available for industrialisation – have they done anything constructive?

Post Binoy Kongar’s comment, Butt, has become a point of discussion for various Political leaders and intellectuals at rallies and meets and some of them have written strong articles on it. My question is, where were these intellectuals and leaders, when another peace loving activist of the Opposition – Shonali Guha, was referring to our Chief Minister’s backside while carrying out the devastation at the Assembly? Why these people’s pens went inkless then? All these people are hypocrites. In all these years they have doled out literary delights and sold their work of art for millions and minted money. Have they ever made an effort to go to the villages to stand by the farmers for whatever their needs might be? Has there been any notable contribution towards these peoples well being? It’s easy to act as a crusader and participate in rallies and meetings and give critical speeches and gain acclamation from a section of the society. It’s also easier to pen revolutionary verses, put them to tune and bring out CDs and cassettes. But does it solve the problem?

There was also a prolonged fast that we all witnessed. The question is that was it a Fast or a Farce? Did anybody know what happened behind the closed curtains? Why wasn’t any other Doctor allowed to check her except her party colleague Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and other TMC affiliated Doctors? These things definitely cast a spell of doubt amongst the public mind.

Why can’t these people see West Bengal progressing? The Government is not run by a bunch of fools who will affect its agricultural strength to develop industries. We feel that the government knows what it is doing and what they are doing is for the good of the people of the state. Appreciate their effort and give them a chance to prove themselves. At this critical juncture, they need our support. As we need to further our strength in the field of agriculture, at the same time we need industries, we need job creation, we need proper infrastructure, we need investments to come in, we all need to reap benefits from what the government is trying to do for us.

To achieve something, we don’t see any harm if the government takes a meager percentage of agricultural land from the total available land to develop industries as we understand that the compensations offered by the Government to the landowners who are parting with their land are the best in the country, they are rehabilitating the farmers and there are job opportunities for everybody.

Please note that the Chief Ministers offer to discuss things across the table has been dismissed time and again. The Chief Minister also said that they were willing to give alternate land to the farmers if they wanted it. But everything was given a deaf ear by the guardians of Opposition. Please also note that the Government is still giving away land (Patta) to people. Had the Government been against agriculture, they could have easily given these lands for developing more industries.

The ploy is to just malign the government and take advantage of the situation. If the Left Front government fails in the forthcoming election, the Opposition will have all the reasons to celebrate. But will anybody accept a barbaric, illogical Opposition party at the helm of affair? Well, time only will tell what we, the public, will have to face.

Meeting and greeting Shri Jyoti Basu and ignoring our Chief Ministers proposal to meet is a good ploy undertaken by the immensely intelligent opposition leader. It proves that she wants to win the popularity of the mass.

Yes, we also sincerely feel that the murderer/s of Tapasi Malik be punished unbiasedly so that such crimes does not take place any more. We are hopeful that the CBI will solve the problem very soon.

One last thing I would like to mention is that during this summer, it has been noticed that the Opposition leader herself addresses the rally almost at the time of sunset, when the temperature goes down considerably, leaving the attendees under heat and dust for the entire day! Do we have to say anything more?

Summing up, I would say that Give The Government An Opportunity To Do Something For Us. If, according to the Opposition that the Government has woken up after 30 years, so be it. There is still a positive note from the investors as far as investment in West Bengal is concerned. We are witnessing the growth of other states. Let us also grow. No point harping over the fact that what all we haven’t achieved under the Left Front regime. Let us look forward to the initiative undertaken by them now for our State To Grow, For Us to Grow. Its better late than never.

Yes, the overall political scenario in Kolkata is really bad. Each party is fighting to meet its own end and the way Mamta is trying to politice the region is worse.

She went to other parts of the country to draw sympathy and landed in no where. Despite getting condelence from people she has nothing. And the condolence went in favour of Tapashi Mallik's father. Who will be land in hayware once Mamta gets her demands, which she can't.

So, it remains a question what Mamta will give to the people of Singur, moreover what people of Singur out of Mamta.

Some people never learn. Some people will never want to learn. At the cost the lives of the people. At the cost ofstalling industrial development.

What did Mamata achieve by going to New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram? The people of those cities have already forgotten about her visit. Such a waste of time and money.

Two things she should definitely keep in mind, appreciate and act accordingly & responsibly are - Fisrtly, She won't ever become the Chief Minister of West Bengal and Secondly, the Tata Motor Small Car Project will come up in Singur.

Lets just hope that good sense prevails and she for once in her entire lifetime act responsibly.
